Artist: THE FUZZ

Title: THE FUZZ

Label: Munster

Format: LP / CD

Debut album by The Fuzz, a new Memphis band made up of Hector Bobo, Steve Selvidge, Bruce Saltmarsh and Jeff Dutton.

The Fuzz will be touring some of the finest cities in the US, and Europe soon, so… Look out!

This record by Memphis-based The Fuzz is the result of a long standing conflict between two brothers. Basically, after a heated argument, Hector Bobo told his brother Harlan T: “You think you’re so great, well you’re not the only one who can make a record!” Although no one in Memphis has ever even seen these two together in one place, no one seems to doubt this actually happened.

Hector gathered up his two friends, Tom Jones and Jeff “Bunny” Dutton, and went out to prove his boast. These two had a long history of terrorizing the good folk of the USA. In bands like Action Family and Dog, the two had proven that they could drunkenly play anywhere. Somehow these three miscreants talked local guitar virtuoso Steve Selvidge into playing bass. They then rebuilt a Teac 4-Track, bought some tape and recorded this record. Steve did a great job of holding the band together, Hector yelled out the songs like he meant it, and Doug Easely mixed it and mastered it.

You will find some fine examples of American rock & roll on this record. A few of them, Teen Rex, Somebody Like You and Merry-Go-Round, could even be played on the radio.

A big thanks goes to The Hold Steady for allowing Steve Selvidge the time to work on this project (Bassist Sweet Jean holds down the bass line for live shows). Thanks Jeannie.

Artist: LOS BICHOS

Title: COLOR HITS

Label: Vinilísssimo

Format: LP

The debut LP by Los Bichos, from 1989, reissued for the first time.

Josetxo Ezponda didn’t hide his influences (Television, Suicide, Scientists, Birthday Party, Stooges, Bo Diddley, The Cramps…) but made them his and offered something new, with original lyrics sung in Spanish and an unique trademark sound. The result still sounds real, natural and fresh.

Liner notes by Iñigo Munster.

Artist: THE REFLECTIONS

Title: SLUGS AND TOADS

Label: Vinilísssimo

Format: LP

A much-needed reissue of this obscure gem of British post-punk from 1981. The Reflections were a sort of post-punk supergroup formed by Mark Perry (Alternative TV, The Good Missionaires, The Door And The Window), Dennis Burns (Alternative TV), Karl Blake (The Lemon Kittens) and Nag (The Door And The Window).

Perry and Nag share vocal duties on an album that opens with the dishevelled pop nugget ‘Tightrope Walker’ to go through more reflective moments such as ‘Demon On My Desires’ and ‘Clamming Up’ and up to outbursts of noisy experimentation and free-form passages that verge towards no wave (‘Nag Takes A Ride, ‘The Parting’). The wonderful cover of Roky Erickson’s ‘The Interpreter’ deserves a mention as one of the highlights of a flawless LP.

Orginally released by Cherry Red in 1981, this is the first ever reissue of “Slugs And Toads”, a lost treasure of British post-punk.

Artist: ORQUESTA EL MACABEO / BIO RITMO

Title: PERICO / CARNAVAL

Label: Vampisoul

Format: 7”

Continuing the journey started with our “¡Saoco!” compilations, the series “Saoco Now!” presents contemporary covers of classics of Puerto Rican dance music. On this first release, two of the most innovative salsa bands working today join forces to pay homage to maestro percussionist and bandleader Rafael Cortijo, a central figure in the repertoire featured on the ¡Saoco! reissues.

One of the great sensations of the current Puerto Rican scene, Orquesta el Macabeo recovers the island’s salsa tradition to update it with new ideas and the energy of its twelve musicians, with backgrounds in punk rock, ska and reggae. After three self-released albums and a Vampisoul compilation (“Salsa Bestial”, 2013), El Macabeo is back with this cover of ‘Perico’, one of the biggest hits by Cortijo y su Combo con Ismael Rivera, originally released in 1959 on their “Quítate de la vía, Perico” LP.

Formed and based in Richmond, Virginia, Bio Ritmo combines 70s style salsa with different eclectic influences, and are one of the most original bands of the last decade. Representative of Cortijo’s New York period, the Latin funk instrumental ‘Carnaval’ first came out on the album “Cortijo y la Máquina del Tiempo / Cortijo And His Time Machine” from 1974. Bio Ritmo’s interpretation (taken from 2011’s album “La verdad”) picks up on the Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms of the original version, adding humorous lyrics born out of the imagination of Rei Álvarez, the band’s singer.

First release of our new 7” series “Saoco Now!”, which will offer current covers of classic songs from Puerto Rico’s rich history of dance music.

Orquesta el Macabeo and Bio Ritmo, two of today’s most exciting salsa combos, reinterpret two tracks originally released by Cortijo y su Combo and update them in their own irresistible style.

The track by Orquesta el Macabeo is exclusive to this release.
